I often feel like a dairy cow for the first couple of months after I have a baby. Drinking a ton of water and nursing every 2-3 hours EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. can wear on a woman. Especially one with three other kids. (I mean, that’s what I’ve heard from *other* moms who have four kids…) Granted, I’m not drinking a bathtub full of water or making 90 glasses of milk a day like a real dairy cow, but each time I nurse or look in the mirror, I feel like I resemble one.
How fitting is it for me that June is Dairy Month?
And the day I started writing this post last week was National Chocolate Ice Cream Day *AND* National Doughnut Day?
Okay, I know that doesn’t have anything to do with feeling like a dairy cow or June being Dairy Month, but it *does* remind me that I’m going to get as large as a cow if I keep eating the way I am currently. Because you know, I’m breastfeeding, and you’re *supposed* to eat more when you’re nursing. Just probably not mint chocolate chip ice cream and chocolate chip cookies and brownies and those ADDICTING Rice Krispies scotcheroos. Because having dinners brought to you every MWF for 5 weeks means having DESSERT brought to you (almost) every MWF for 5 weeks. Exactly what my postpartum body needs, right?
Wrong. This postpartum body needs to get healthy. And that means rather than eating a huge bowl of homemade mint chocolate chip ice cream, I’ll eat a small bowl of lowfat strawberry frozen yogurt. And rather than eating more chips at lunch if I’m still hungry, I’ll grab some string cheese or fruit instead.
It also means exercising. Isaac hit 6 weeks old this week, meaning I had to get on a scale at the doctor’s office. Which further confirmed why I don’t like looking in the mirror right now. It’s officially time to get those extra pounds off this baby-having body. And not just the 8 baby pounds left – it’s the additional 18 I should have lost a long time ago.
I need to lose that weight safely. I still have a baby to feed for the next 11 months, so doing a crash diet isn’t going to work. It’s going to take a healthy eating plan, including three servings of nutrient-rich dairy products every day, and exercising.
Here’s the exciting part. I’m going to be working with Indiana Dairy and their Refuel Runner Ambassador Program. I’ve committed to running three races, writing about them and the best part: refueling with chocolate milk. I’m super excited, because I’m planning on running some really fun races and I get to drink chocolate milk to recover after training and running those races. Studies have shown that chocolate milk is the best recovery beverage after a hard work out. In fact, it is the official refuel beverage of IRONMAN. (Which will NOT be one of the races I run by the way.)
SO. My first race is on August 24th and it’s the 7th Annual Running for World Water 5k. That gives me 9 weeks to get back in the swing of things and ease into a running and exercise plan, giving myself some slack for a week of vacation and those, unfortunately more-than-often, sleepless nights. My plan is to run 3 days a week and do some other activity 2 more days a week (bike or walk to the pool, play Just Dance 4, etc.).
And it’s going to be necessary, because of those sleepless nights, to make sure I’m eating smart or my body is going to revolt. So I’m going to seriously watch what I eat by eating smart calories and making sure I get all of my food group servings, including those 3 good dairy eats each day, including a glass of chocolate milk to help my body recover on my training days.
